Tips for Covering French Doors

Tip #1: We recommend outside mounting blinds and shades for French Doors.

Tip #2: Requesting hold down brackets for the bottoms of your shades will hold the bottom rail in place to prevent swinging when the door is opened or closed.

Tip #3: Requesting control cords on the side of the door where the hinge is located will prevent the cords from getting stuck in the door and prevent damage to them.

Options to Cover French Doors

Standard Cellular Shades

For cellular shades mounted on a door, mount the shade approximately 2 inches above the trim or top of the glass and extend the shade an additional 2 inches below the glass or trim. Add a minimum of one inch to each side of the trim or glass.

Adding 2 inches to the width and 4 inches to the height of the area to be covered will increase privacy and light control.

Top Down/Bottom Up Shades

For shades mounted on a door, we recommend ordering the Top Down/Bottom Up option. With this option, you can lower your shades from the top to see out and avoid bending over to release the shade from the hold down brackets.

As with a standard shade, add 4 inches to the height of glass with trim to enable you to mount the shade 2 inches above the door, as well as mounting hold down brackets at the bottom.
